Job Description
About our group:

Our Advance Modeling and Design (AMD) group in Mechanical Technology Development develops recording head technology for Seagate's HDD products being introduced in 2 to 4+ years. The AMD group is responsible for underpinning the mechanical requirements for new technology, creating and deploying modeling tools, making performance assessments of new designs, and maturing selected technologies to productization.

About the role - you will:

  • Use existing modeling software, and create new computational models, to simulate the performance and failure modes of critical Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) features, including the plasmonic near-field transducer, actuators, and light path.
  • Interface with device test groups to understand the performance and limitations of current designs as well as the new designs that you generate.
  • Work together with transducer designers to invent, model, and enable experimental evaluation of new designs such as proximity sensors, MEMS actuators, and new recording devices.
  • Work with the wafer process integration teams to generate new ideas ranging from test devices on wafers all the way to complete recording heads that can be practically built.
About you:

  • You are an innovative and self-motivated worker.
  • You have excellent spoken and written communication skills, and strong collaborative abilities.
  • You enjoy learning about physical sciences and applying this knowledge to solve engineering problems.
  • You have worked with common computational models in the fields of solid mechanics, heat transfer, and/or material science, including Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Finite Element Models (FEMs) highly preferred.
Your experience includes:

  • Using and programming diverse computational modeling techniques, with a strong understanding of both the theory and application of numerical methods.
  • You have worked with common computational models in the fields of solid mechanics, heat transfer, and/or material science, including Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Finite Element Models (FEMs) highly preferred.
  • Additional useful knowledge with application to the development of HDD recording heads, such as fluid dynamics, nanoscale sciences, solid state physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, tribology, non-geometrical optics, plasmonics, and/or magnetics/micro magnetics.
  • Familiarity with microfabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of applied statistics and Design of Experiments.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline and 5 years of work experience. OR
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline and 3 years of work experience OR
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline and some research experience.
