Antitrust Associate

 

Steptoe is seeking a junior to midlevel associate with 3-4 years of experience to join the firm’s growing antitrust practice. The ideal candidate will have experience working at the Department of Justice Antitrust Division (DOJ) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), or experience working on DOJ or FTC antitrust matters.

 

Experience handling civil conduct or merger and joint venture analysis and investigations, and litigating antitrust matters, including drafting substantive motions and briefs and participating in depositions and witness prep and interviews, would also be valuable. Experience in the telecommunications and internet space is a plus.

 

Steptoe’s antitrust attorneys help defend companies in civil conduct investigations, and obtain clearance for, or oppose, large and complex mergers and acquisitions, especially in regulated industries. They litigate Section 1, Section 2, and Section 7 cases in courts across the country. They represent companies in DOJ, FTC, FCC, and state attorney general investigations regarding civil and criminal antitrust issues. The group provides general antitrust compliance counseling related to product pricing and distribution.

Government Affairs Advisor (Energy)

Steptoe is seeking a Government Affairs Advisor to join the Firm’s Government Affairs and Public Policy (“GAPP”) practice group in its Washington, DC office. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of relevant experience working at the Department of Energy, on Capitol Hill, or in other advocacy-type positions with a focus on energy policy. We are looking for someone with experience in low-carbon technology, including carbon capture and hydrogen technology. The Government Affairs Advisor will be called upon to develop and implement strategic advocacy plans, analyze legislation, engage with Congress and Administration officials, advocate on behalf of clients directly with policymakers, develop client- and Hill- facing materials, and support other policy and regulatory work on behalf of clients. An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is required. Candidates must have excellent academic credentials and strong interpersonal, communication, research, writing, and analytical skills.
 
Duties may include:
  • Lead efforts on client activities, working independently or in coordination with other team members.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with Congress and Administration officials.
  • Develop strategies and policies to help clients address challenges and/or opportunities at the federal level.
  • Manage client relationships, supporting the execution of deliverables including managing staff.
  • Conduct in-depth research, assist with interviews, and support drafting of policy reports, one-pagers, and other proposals and advocacy materials.
  • Identify and monitor legislative and policy issues relative to Steptoe’s clients and perform research and analysis on federal policy/regulatory opportunities.
  • Track relevant news sources, legislation of interest to clients, and prepare client updates.
  • Work in support of client priorities in the annual appropriations process.
  • Support engagement efforts with key stakeholders, legislators, committee members and staff to report on, provide insight and/or update on legislation for clients.
  • Attend client meetings, hearings, webinars, and other events as needed.
  • Manage the development of comments and testimony on behalf of our clients.
  • Be available for meetings in Washington, DC in support of client activities and represent Steptoe in meetings and at events.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required and 5+ years working in energy-related policy role
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively. Must be a self-starter.
  • Good judgement, professionalism, and ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy in dealing with co-workers, clients, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working with federal agencies on policy implementation and/or experience driving legislation on Capitol Hill strongly preferred.
  • Proven critical thinking skills and ability to grasp “big picture” concepts as well as granular complexities.
  • Highly flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances, capable of working independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining a high degree of thoroughness and accuracy.

Patent Prosecution Associate/Of Counsel

Staff Attorney, Litigation

Steptoe LLP ("Steptoe") is seeking an experienced litigator with at least 5+ years of experience for a Staff Attorney position in its  Century City or Los Angeles office.  Alternate locations and fully-remote work also will be considered for otherwise qualified applicants. The Staff Attorney will primarily assist with litigating and settling consumer financial services litigation on behalf of a Fortune 100 company, under the supervision of a Partner in the litigation group. 
 
The Staff Attorney’s responsibilities will include reviewing daily litigation correspondence and pleadings and reporting time-sensitive issues to the Partner in charge; managing litigation calendar and ensuring all deadlines are met; document review; supervising local counsel; and drafting general pleadings including answers, pro hac vice motions, and certain other motions as necessary. Settlement responsibilities include communicating regularly with opposing counsel to enter into settlements; drafting and editing client settlement recommendations, settlement agreements, and correspondence relating to settlement; and assisting in the preparation of related client reporting. Trial work is not expected although court appearances may be required on routine pretrial matters.  Arbitration (non-jury) merits hearings may be required on occasion. 
 
Candidates should have strong academic credentials and excellent writing and analytical skills. Must have painstaking attention to detail, be capable of multitasking, and be comfortable dealing with opposing counsel. This position will have a hybrid work schedule with some days in office and some working remotely.  This is not a partnership track position.
