Job Description

The Fire Extinguisher Inspector is located within Operations in the Facilities Inspections and Environmental Compliance Department and will be responsible for conducting on-site inspections and routine maintenance on fire extinguishers in Baltimore City Public Schools facilities and school buildings for compliance. Responsible for inspecting buildings to ensure they are up to fire control standards. Detect possible fire hazards and issue work orders if buildings are not in compliance.

Essential Functions
  • Performs routine maintenance and inspects fire extinguisher equipment in school buildings to assure compliance with applicable building and fire safety codes; and ensures compliance with state facilities and maintenance assessments for all schools.
  • Ensures buildings are in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
  • Writes and files reports and recommend actions to bring properties into compliance.
  • Responsible for the recharging of fire extinguisher units, and fire extinguisher equipment maintenance to ensure each device is operational in case of a critical emergency.
  • Conducts fire safety inspections.
  • Responsible for the input of work orders in School Dude (a computerized management maintenance system) for tracking of the repair and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
  • Keeps abreast of current fire safety codes and firefighting procedures.
  • Performs training for building occupants on the proper use of a fire extinguisher and other fire safety equipment.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Class C or Non-commercial driver's license or an equivalent out of state driver's license acceptable.
  • Knowledge of and ability to read labels, safety warnings, and safety guidelines.
  • Attention to detail and attentiveness always to ensure safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external teams including City Schools staff and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Basic skills in the use of Windows environment and applications including Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment.
  • Previous experience in particular industry, especially in educational setting preferred.
  • Certification (National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors) NAFED and on the job training.
