About the Department:

The Facilities organization provides facilities and facilities-related services to George Mason University. We ensure that facilities are provided and available to support the academic mission of the institution. The Senior Building System Engineer will be based at the Biomedical Research Lab (BRL), a 52,000 square-foot regional biocontainment laboratory (RBL) to support infectious disease research and foster collaborations with other national and global laboratories. The BRL is fully approved and licensed for work by the CDC and USDA and is accredited by AAALAC.

About the Position:

Manage the various control systems for a 24/7 365-day building, including the building automation systems, building access systems, research database, and provide support for the video monitoring systems. The systems comprise primary and secondary servers, databases, controllers, sensors, backups, and enterprise software packages.

Responsibilities:

Building Automation Systems Administrator:

  • Maintains the Building Automation Systems, including various applications, databases, and primary and redundant servers;
  • Manages the complete lifecycle of various applications, databases, and servers that comprise the Building Automation Systems at the BRL;
  • Manages the complex schedule of patches and upgrades while maintaining 24/7 365 days of service with minimum service disruptions;
  • Ensures compliance with all CDC, USDA, Commonwealth, and Mason policies;
  • Manages the overall complex schedule for sequencing patches and versions of the Building Automation Systems while minimizing the impact on our customers;
  • Ensures robust backup and disaster recovery measures are in place;
  • Maintains methodical written upgrade/patch plans to prevent disruptions;
  • Manages the repair, replacement, and proper configuration/setup of BAS system components (e.g., actuators, sensors, etc.) by in-house and/or contract personnel;
  • Communicates with all stakeholders' important dates and impacts;
  • Oversees the design and engineering of control system hardware and software programming based on project plans, specifications, and other contract documents; and
  • Troubleshoots complex issues by performing network, database, and system troubleshooting and emergency repair programming as needed.

Building Access Controls System Administrator:

  • Manages the security of the Building Access Controls System, which includes all various applications, databases, and primary and redundant servers;
  • Manages the Building Access Controls System, including primary and redundant servers, OS, databases, applications, and backups;
  • Oversees the security of users and system access to the Building Access Controls System and ensures user and level of access are appropriate;
  • Ensures compliance with all CDC, USDA, Commonwealth, and Mason policies;
  • Maintains a highly secure environment for all components of the Building Access System;
  • Establishes robust monitoring and risk threat analysis of the Building Access System;
  • Ensures proper and timely user access to the Building Access Controls System;
  • Ensures robust backup and disaster recovery measures are in place; and
  • Communicates with all stakeholders' important dates and impacts.

Select Agent System Administrator:

  • Manages the Select Agent System, which includes all various applications, databases, and primary and redundant servers;
  • Manages the Select Agent Tracking System, including primary and redundant servers, OS, web server, databases, applications, and backups;
  • Oversees the security of users and system access to the Select Agent System and ensures user and level of access are appropriate;
  • Ensures compliance with all CDC, USDA, Commonwealth, and Mason policies;
  • Maintains a highly secure environment for all components of the Select Agent Tracking System;
  • Ensures robust backup and disaster recovery measures are in place;
  • Ensures proper and timely user access to Select Agent Tracking System;
  • Communicates with all stakeholders' important dates and impacts; and
  • Conducts and maintains compliance records for annual user audits and access privileges.

Video Monitoring and other IT Support:

  • Manages the security of the Building Automation Systems, which includes all various applications, databases, and servers across multiple installations;
  • Provides IT support and liaison with University Life for IT issues with the Video Monitoring System;
  • Provides IT support for Mason Facilities hardware and user support;
  • Ensures IT compliance with all Commonwealth and Mason policies;
  • Maintains a highly secure environment for all components of the Building Automation Systems;
  • Coordinates BRL user access to the system with University Life;
  • Establishes robust monitoring and risk threat analysis of complete Building Automation System components;
  • Ensures the proper and timely user access to all Building Automation System components; and
  • Conducts and maintains compliance records for annual user audits and access privileges.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and 3 years or more experience maintaining Building Automation or administrator-level of other enterprise systems, servers, and databases;
  • Minimum of 3 years experience using Building Automation or administrator-level of other enterprise software;
  • Significant experience maintaining Building Automation or administrator-level of other enterprise systems, servers, and databases;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of energy management concepts, utilities, building systems, DDC control systems, computer software, hardware, and maintaining database servers. Knowledge of Microsoft server operating systems, database software, and Building Automation Systems; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 . The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on management of building automation software;
  • Knowledge and use of Siemens Desigo or Apogee Building Automation Systems; and
  • CompTIA Server+ or A+, Microsoft Azure Administrator or MCSE, MCSA: SQL Server 2012/14, completion of Desigo CC Master Operator Training Path.
